Achievers

The Trust’s ‘Local Achievers’ initiative has already rewarded numerous people in the local community by providing them with tickets for a wide range of ‘good citizen’ activities. This scheme will continue and help many fans, including many from disadvantaged parts of society, to see their team at St. James’ Park.

The Trust committee will continue to work with community organisations on a match by match basis to award tickets to ‘local achievers’, as well as inviting nominations from members of NUST.

Do you know someone who is a local achiever? Why don't you nominate them for a trip to St James' Park?

A Question of Sport - Your chance to make a difference

StOswaldlogoThe latest NUST ‘Local Achievers’, who received tickets courtesy of the Trust for the Blackburn match, are St Oswald’s Hospice which provides specialist care for North East adults, young people and children with life limiting conditions. Their annual running costs are £8.5 million, of which £6.5 million must be raised through voluntary giving. No charge is made for the services provided ensuring hospice care is available to all.

This great north east institution needs your help and the best part of all, you can have a great night and help St.Oswald’s at the same time.

Sporting stars from around the North East are supporting St Oswald’s Hospice in a brand new Sports Dinner Event.

The 'A Question of Sport' style, all star sporting dinner, A Load of Balls, takes place on Thursday 29th September at Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground.

The event features sporting celebs including international cricket stars, Steve Harmison and Graham Onions and former NUFC players John Beresford, Steve Howie and Olivier Bernard.

The sporting stars will be completing a quiz in the style of a Question of Sport. Compered by Doddie Weir and hosted by BBC’s Dawn Thewlis the event also includes a pie and peas supper, raffle and auction.

It’s set to be a great night of entertainment and will be raising vital funds for St Oswald’s Hospice. Tickets are £25 or a table of 10 for £225. Do Your Bit And Help Run Geordie Run A Bit Further

RGRUSA2Unless you have literally being living on another planet in recent months, you can’t have failed to marvel at the superhuman (Super Geordie) efforts of Run Geordie Run, AKA Mark Allison.

Having completed his super marathon 3100 mile trek across America inside his target of 100 days, it was a bit of a no brainer to once again award him NUST local achiever status. As well as helping to make you all aware of how to top up the charity fundraising we have also provided two tickets for the Fulham match and Mark has nominated the two most important members of his back-up crew, long suffering (but very supportive) wife Katy and son Jack.

The current running total stands at over £85,000 in support of The Children's Foundation (Charity No. 1000013) and St Benedict's Hospice (Charity No. (1019410).

Mark has now taken on a further challenge and that is to try and get the total up to £100,000, with our help he can do it!

On September 3rd 2011 the Run Geordie Run charity ball will be held at Newcastle Marriott Gosforth Park.

The ball is hosted by Real Radio’s Gary and Lisa. The Run Geordie Run charity ball promises to be the homecoming of all homecomings. Mark will be sharing the highs and lows of the trip and will be giving the audience an insight into just how he managed to run so far in just 100 days. As well as the usual auctions, games and emotional speeches there will be a mini Las Vegas casino for you to win your (virtual) fortune.

From Westgate to St.James’ Park

Westgate_3-400The latest NUST ‘local achiever’ is Shaun Wait - who was the winner of the NUST competition at the recent Westgate Juniors Fun Day. Hundreds of boys and girls attended the event and entered our competition - guessing the number of names on our giant Northern Rock Shirt. Shaun was the closest and won a pair of tickets to the Newcastle v Arsenal match on Saturday. Shaun is pictured receiving the tickets from Coach Development Officer Keith Parsons.

Westgate Juniors do a marvellous job in providing a positive environment for children of all ages to play football, only made possible by a dedicated team of volunteer helpers. Their fun day was a massive success and NUST are proud to help in a small way by helping to provide a web presence for their football teams. See Here.

Newcastle - The Toma Fund Pt 2

Toma_Fund-400

NUST's latest 'Local Achievers' are Andrea and Dave Thompson, they were due to be our ‘Achievers’ for the Wolves match but illness intervened. Happily they can make this weekend’s final match of the season and it is a great cause for us to round the season off with. They founded 'The Toma Fund' in 2008 in memory of their son, Jordan, who lost his life to cancer (leukaemia), at the age of 15. Jordan, who attended the Newcastle United academy from the age of 10, began fundraising to help other teenagers in the North East who were also fighting this cruel disease. Following his tragic death the work has continued and raised an amazing £350,000+ for the Teenage Cancer Unit at the RVI.

The Toma Fund has grown substantially and has now realised the dream of becoming a stand alone, registered charity. The charity will now not only help teenagers fighting cancer, but also children, young people and their families receiving treatment for cancer at the Newcastle Upon Tyne Foundation Trust hospitals.

The Dreame Fund

DREAME_Ball_-_D_RyanThis weekend’s local achievers have been nominated on behalf of the ‘Dreame Fund’. Paul Taylor and Dave Scott (pictured below) will be attending the Birmingham match courtesy of NUST, their valuable role as part of the team is in the capacity of operating theatre orderlies.

This is the charitable organisation which plays a massive role in helping patients (and their families) when they have cause to need the help of the Integrated Critical Care Unit (ICCU) at the Freeman Hospital.

The Dreame Fund is a major help in coping both physically and psychologically with such events. As well as providing suitable equipment to enhance patient rehabilitation, it also helps to cater for the more holistic aspects of care.

Patients typically will have had treatment for life-threatening conditions such as cancer of the liver and pancreas, as well as spinal corrective surgery and transplant surgery.

The ICCU provides care for patients who cannot be cared for in an ordinary ward setting.

There are a few tickets left for a black tie fundraising dinner on 14th May (see below for details) or alternatively there are a number of auction items including a cricket bat signed by the England team (Reserve £200) and an hour’s coaching with Geoff Cook (Reserve £70). If you can’t make the dinner you can submit an advanced sealed bid via secure email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Supermac and The Foyer

Tyneside_FoyerHelp Newcastle's young homeless and win a signed SuperMac football.

The NUST's local achievers this week are 2 representatives of the Tyneside Foyer which was destroyed by fire recently.  They will be attending the Newcastle v Everton match on Saturday courtesy of the Trust.

A signed football by SuperMac and his fellow North East legends is up for grabs thanks to a generous donation from Real Radio North East – with all money going to victims of the fire that devastated a unique service for homeless young people in inner-city Newcastle.

As the Newcastle Evening Chronicle reported last month: "More than 30 vulnerable young adults escaped from a blazing building as flames ripped through a hostel for the homeless”.
