Bamburgh NUSC Roadshow - 10th Sept 2009

Ando presents Milburns with photolThe NUST Roadshow travelled north to the coastal town of Bamburgh on the evening of 10th September and set up it’s stall at the Milburn Bar based in the Victoria Hotel, a drinking venue for JET’s son. What a venue! Adorned with framed Photographs of ‘Wor Jackie’ on the walls it was a fitting venue to hold a supporters roadshow. Well worth a visit.

The event was very well attended with two local football sides having abandoned training to attend together with others who had travelled down from Berwick and surrounding areas…..and even a smattering of visitors who were in the area on holiday and had spotted the posters.

The evening began with MC Malcolm Shiels briefing the audience on the activities of the Club, following it’s initial creation a year ago, to recently converted Trust status. Of interest, as usual, was takeover talk.

Malcolm then handed the mic over to former Newcastle United stalwart John Anderson, for his first spot, who briefed the audience on his views about the current status of the club, his views on the players and thoughts about the season. The audience were particularly interested in his views on Shola - a discussion topic which seems to have been raised at all Roadshows and a topic of some discussion over the months.

After John’s spot interim Committee Member Colin Whittle then explained to the audience the history of the Trust movement, about Supporters Direct and support they had given to fans up and down the country and the setting up of the Newcastle United Supporters Trust.

There then followed the Trust football quiz which certainly set people thinking…name the only club in the league that begins with 5 consonants? ....being a sampler……by the way the answer is Crystal Palace ! Presented by Tom Lynch the quiz certainly caught the attention of the audience and turned in to an interesting ‘inter-active ‘ quiz…you had to be there!

Bamburgh_-_MilburnsAfter a short break , over to star of the night John Anderson…and if you haven’t had the opportunity to hear him in full flow-talking about his career, players and managers then it’s to be recommended. Remember legendary hardman Billy Whitehurst? John confirmed he was indeed hard! What about managers he’s played under? John gave a quick run through his managers at Newcastle…..and Gazza….well everbody has got a Gazza story. There was some hidden gems in there and the audience were appreciative of Ando’s tales. Hear him at a future Roadshow!

The evening ended by Ando (on behalf of the Trust interim committee) presenting the Milburn Bar with a framed photograph from the 50’s with Jackie taking up centre stage. The picture had remained sitting in a loft for years and the contributor thought it deserved a better home and what better than a shrine to Jackie Milburn.

A great night had by all!...and a long journey home….I don’t normally go that far on my holidays.
