I loved to hear "Hallelujah JohnTudor, John Tudor " booming out of the Leazes End following around the rest of SJP. In those days Tudor was my favourite player , above Supermac, Terry Hibbit et al because of one main asset, he appeared to be able to reach any ball, particularly those that no other player would bother with. I remember seeing him interviewed on SHOOT after scoring one of those at the back-post , (Gallowgate end, keepers left) when he explained that he had a pair of size ten boots but luckily that day he was wearing his new size elevens which gave him that extra reach, I was gullible enough and believed it.
The match I seem to remember him most for was Hereford Utd. Home and away. Probably because the BBC take so much pleasure is showing THAT goal year after year, time after time. Proof positive that the media have always loved to persecute us. Tudor is mentioned in that short clip which always seems to last about 2 hours.
Coming to us in 1971 after 3 years at Sheffield United he had a decent if not prolific scoring record, 30 goals in 71 appearance at Sheffield followed by 53 in 164 games for us. I was disappointed to see him move on to Stoke City for a paltry £30,000 in 1976.
He did spend a little time at North Shields, moved around a little, including Belgium as as most former players seemed to do in those days, became a publican for a while before he moved to America and became a coach. My most recent memory of him was on a visit to SJP when he told the Sunday Sun how he could make Oba Martins into an excellent centre forward if he could coach him for a few months. I've often wondered why our coaching set-up doesn't seem to get the best out of players and now wonder if John Tudor could have made Oba great.
Back then Supermac was the high profile glamorous star but for me Tudor was a true hero , Hallelujah JohnTudor,John Tudor ,Hallelujah JohnTudor, John Tudor, Hallelujah John Tudor,John Tudor - my Cult-hero.
