All 3 major parties released their election manifestos this week with both Labour and the Conservatives mentioning football fans owning stakes.
In the Labour manifesto is the passage: “Sports governing bodies will be empowered to scrutinise takeovers of clubs, ensuring they are in the long-term interests of the club and the sport. We will develop proposals to enable registered Supporters Trusts to buy stakes in their club.”
In the "50 Steps to a future Fair for all" section step No. 32 states :
"Registered Supporters Trusts enabled to buy stakes in their club bringing mutualism to the heart of football"
The Conservative manifesto states “We will . . . reform the governance arrangements in football to enable co-operative ownership models to be established by supporters.”
An NUST spokeman commented "The idea of supporters owning a stake in and being a positive influence within their club, is now well and truly out in the political arena. We welcome proposals put forward by any political party that will help to advance and empower fans to achieve these goals. It gives all Trusts confidence moving forward that the political establishment may in the future help create the opportunity for fans to help their clubs be run in a way that is to the benefit of anyone who has the interests of their club at heart. Football fans don't just exist for ninety minutes on a Saturday or whenever else their team plays, they are fully paid up citizens whose sporting love has maybe been a glaring omission when politicians in the past have put together their manifestos".
