North East football teams are being offered a helping hand by a supporters’ trust determined to promote grassroots football in the region.
The Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) will provide junior and senior football clubs with websites free of charge. The trust have launched the community initiative in the hope it will allow clubs to attract more players and keep talent in the region. One team, Westgate Juniors, has already joined up – with a link from the NUST website giving them a dedicated page for results, reviews and latest news.
NUST chairman Mark Jensen said: “It’s important we do these community initiatives. We understand most football clubs are run by volunteers who specialise in coaching and if we can help them with their websites and the like, it will be a big help. When I was younger there was very little organised football. Kids need every encouragement to get out of the house and play football sometimes, so if we can get more of them interested it is great”.
The offer from the group is also open to school teams.
Tony Stephenson, the NUST member spearheading the initiative, said: “Short of helping out clubs financially, we feel this is a way we can help local teams. Children are interested in the internet, so if we can combine that with football to get them playing it is great. We will do anything we can to help football clubs and promote grassroots football and we thought this was a useful service we could provide. It would be great if in future we can prevent the best players from leaving the region”.
Keith Morrice, secretary of the Newcastle Westgate Juniors, said: “The website is helping to get the club out there and hopefully get more children to come along. The site lets the youngsters see what they have done and read the match reports”.
Any teams interested in the scheme should go to www.nust.org.uk for more information.
