Newcastle United Supporters Trust back Supporters Direct
If you weren’t already aware, Supporters Direct (the umbrella organisation for football supporters trusts) have had their funding cut following messages sent out on Twitter by SD Chief Executive, Dave Boyle. Boyle later resigned due to the backlash following his abusive tweets after AFC Wimbledon’s promotion.
However, Boyle’s resignation hasn’t prevented the cut in funding by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF) which is jointly financed by the FA and Premier League. This totally over the top reaction means in effect that Supporters Direct could find it all but impossible to carry on in its present form. The harsh reality would be that the daily help and advice freely available for trusts such as NUST would be no longer there, as well as the guidance that may be needed in the future if the fans ever have the opportunity to own a stake in Newcastle United.
Remember, many communities might not even have still had a football club to support if it hadn’t been for the existence and help of Supporters Direct. Just ask any fan of Swansea, Lincoln, York, AFC Wimbledon, Chesterfield, Bury, Chester, Clydebank, Notts County and many others.
Supporters Direct are an organisation well worth fighting for, they are there to help fans and now this is the chance for fans to be there for them.If you care about this matter you can register your support at the Supporters Direct Has My Support Facebook page which now has over two thousand members. You could contact your MP (38 of them at the last count have signed an Early Day Motion in Parliament), and further information on how to do this is available here. Or the Department For Culture, Media & Sport can contacted here.
