A NEWCASTLE United run with “honesty and integrity” – that is the vision of the Supporters Trust attempting to raise the money to oust Mike Ashley.
The NUST launched with a blaze of publicity this week and although there is a recognition that doubts remain over their ability to pull off such a huge undertaking, there is also confidence.
“I think fans have every right to wonder if the 'Yes We Can' campaign can succeed, anything that is groundbreaking will attract doubt as to whether it's possible,” Trust spokesman Mark Jensen, who edits fanzine The Mag, said. “The NUST have embarked on an initial six-week advertising and media campaign which will set out how the buy-out of the club can be successful if the fans get behind it. This is a very public campaign and it will be up to each individual and company to decide if they want to be part of it, we're very confident that over a period of time the vast majority will see it can succeed and will come on board to help reclaim their club.”
Asked how it can be done, the NUST believe that money is the answer. “Mike Ashley has repeatedly stated he wants to sell the club and clearly there has been no credible interest, to fill that void NUST have taken up the challenge to lead the campaign to buy the club,” said Jensen. This is not an overnight idea. Months of planning have brought NUST to this point following countless meetings with prominent local business, financial and civic leaders to fine tune the idea. Further details will emerge over the six-week campaign but if the fans can do their bit and show they have the appetite to raise a significant amount of money, local business people have given assurances that they can then do their bit to make this a reality. The first stage is to raise enough money to enable representatives to open up negotiations with the current owner, if we reach that point the rest is achievable.
“The response so far from supporters has been unbelievable, together we can do this and have a club we once again can all be proud of. I'd urge all fans to visit www.nust.org.uk to see how they can get involved and very shortly we will be publicising a base in the city where people who don't have computer access can get information.”
If successful, members would vote for a board and president, who would in turn appoint professionals to run the club – similar to the Barcelona mode
