Trust won’t forget its roots

THE traditional support of Newcastle United is deeply rooted in the working-class community of Tyneside.

That is why the United Supporters Trust , who officially launched their bid to buy power this week, are so acutely aware of the financial restrictions of their broad fan base. With such thoughts in mind, the Trust have worked diligently to bring down the cost of minimal investment in their takeover plans.

It has been advertised at £2,500 but the figure as revealed earlier this week has been adjusted to £1,500 to try and make it possible for more fans can come to the table. What is more, the Trust are currently negotiating with financial companies with the intention of offering different types of investment – ie fans may be able to pay by direct debit until they reach the required level, now £1,500.

It is called understanding your customers and considering their feelings and aspirations. Something Mike Ashley is not too hot on!

The biggest battle is for fans’ hearts and minds

Trust puts out a positive message Can Newcastle United really fall under supporter control? Mark Douglas reports on moves to buy out current owner Mike Ashley

THE Newcastle United Supporters Trust have fired the opening shots in the battle for hearts and minds as they attempt to wrestle control from Mike Ashley – and one of their first moves is a canny one. Borrowing the ‘Yes We Can’ slogan utilised to perfection by Barack Obama was an acknowledgement that in football terms they are pioneers – and an acceptance of the baggage that goes with that.

Because the biggest hurdle that the NUST faces is convincing supporters jaded by years of mismanagement that it can be done.

St James’ Park is fit for World Cup

Naming row won’t affect hosting bid. The furore over Mike Ashley’s decision to rename St James’ Park will not derail moves to bring the World Cup to Tyneside, councillors say. Newcastle and Gateshead are bidding to host a group game, a knockout match, or both, should England win its application to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

But fans have threatened protests during Newcastle United ’s home games over the Toon owner’s plan to call the stadium Sportsdirect.com@St James’ Park.
