It’s my guess that every Mag, whether at the match or watching it on SKY went home with a huge grin after this vital victory.
Jose Enrique, Mike Williamson and Peter Lovenkrands returned to the side. The game kicked off in awful conditions and after 5 minutes the only effort at either goal was Anderson’s ambitious header which dropped on the roof of Harper’s net. It took until the 20th minute for us to register our first sight of goal. A superb cross picked out Carroll at the back post and his volley was saved by Camp. Our next effort at goal was a mad scramble in the box when Andy Carroll went on a ‘dummy’ frenzy and eventually saw his shot blocked. Forest had an opportunity to score but Blackstock kicked fresh air on the penalty spot. Some resolute defending by both sides saw goal mouth action at a premium but Enrique fired in a low cross/shot which Lovenkrands nearly applied a decisive touch to. 0-0 at half time, with all to play for.
With only seconds on the clock, Nathan Tyson made a mess of a glorious chance, he managed to mistime and miscue his header, although our 2 central defenders should not have been standing watching him do it. Guthrie sent a free kick over into The Leazes End on the hour, but Ameobi (on for Carroll) soon had us in front when he took a ball from Nolan, slid into the box and fired a left footed shot past Camp off the far post. A Routledge snap shot almost resulted in a second but Camp stood and repelled his vicious effort. Nolan brought a fine save from Camp with a left foot shot which got turned behind for a corner. Gutierrez had a shot deflected over and Camp made a smart stop from a Guthrie free kick. But the coup de grace came in stoppage time, when Ameobi back heeled to the on rushing Enrique, the Spaniard coolly side stepped the last defender before thumping a right foot shot past Camp. Wild celebrations were sparked on the pitch, in the dug outs, in the stands and in the pubs/clubs and homes across Tyneside.
Promotion is possible on Saturday if we win and Forest lose. Friday offers us the chance to hope that Leicester can take points off WBA.
