On a night when getting the 3 points was all that mattered we actually managed to clear the attack on our goal difference which Derby County inflicted on us last week. It took going a goal behind for us to wake up but in the end this was fairly comfortable.
Hughton re-jigged the side after the Swansea performance, bringing back Williamson and Gutierrez, moving Guthrie inside and moving Lovenkrands up front with Carroll instead of the not quite midfield/not quite up front role he performed in on Saturday.
Coventry started on the front foot with an early long range shot and a shot on the turn by Morrison which was cleared off the line by Nolan. Westwood then made a fine save to deny Lovenkrands whose header seemed destined for the net. Coloccini got on the end of a few corners but his headers were off target. McIndoe tried his luck from outside the box but Harper saved well. However on 35 minutes The Sky Blues took the lead when a left wing cross found Morrison who appeared to fall over. Somehow the ball sneaked into the far corner of Harper’s net. We hit back almost immediately when a headed clearance dropped out of the sky for Routledge to lash a right foot volley past Westwood. The sides went in level at the break. 1-1.
The second half was just 8 minutes old when Guthrie slid Kevin Nolan into the left hand side of the box. His cross found Andy Carroll’s forehead, 2 yards from goal and he notched his 2nd goal of the week. Carroll almost grabbed a second for himself with an individual effort, but then Routledge was fouled in the area. After Barnett was sent off, Lovenkrands sent a left foot penalty into the top corner. After a series of substitutions the game began to drift, but our subs combined to seal the game when Pancrate’s right wing cross eluded Best, but found Ryan Taylor who applied the close range finish. We’d have taken this before kick off.
