Darlington Football Club's future has been dramatically salvaged for just their next three matches, hours after the administrator told the manager and players the club were going into liquidation. Man City’s Losses and Financial Fair Play

newspaper_clip_artWhat wasn’t said about Manchester City running up English football’s largest ever annual loss was perhaps as instructive as a window into the modern game than what was. It wasn’t said that the £197m would cover the equivalent of the Premier League’s contribution to the Football Foundation for the next 16 years. Nor was it said that it was over £30m more than the combined spending of 5 other teams in the Premier League the year before, nor that it was more than the entire TV deal for the Football League for the next three years.

Top clubs could pull out of Champions League

newspaper_clip_artop European clubs could ultimately decide to leave Uefa and the Champions League and form their own breakway competition as a solution to the constraints imposed by the Financial Fair Play regulations. There is a growing fear, exemplified by the move of Nicholas Anelka, possibly to be followed by Didier Drogba, that financial power in football may start to shift from Europe to Asia.

For now the strategy of clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City is to argue that they have a long-term strategy to break even in the future. Whether this will convince Uefa's enforcers remains to be seen.

Berlin football club sells its soul – but only to fans

newspaper_clip_artFC Union is selling shares to survive but has limits to avoid them being bought en masse by investors looking to make money

Standing in the mud outside FC Union's woodland stadium, Frank Fritz reflected on the sacrifices he has made for his favourite football club. "I spent a hundred hours here pouring concrete," he said, pointing to the steps on the western stand. "Two weeks' holiday it took, including weekends." But it was worth it, said the 45-year-old Berlin refuse collector. Fritz was one of more than 2,000 Union fans who gave their time to rebuild the club's worse-for-wear ground when it became clear the team could not afford the renovations itself.

Premier League clubs could be given public money, says Jeremy Hunt

newspaper_clip_art• Money will have to be used to boost grassroots sport

• Government wants biggest possible increase in participation

The culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has said that public money could be handed to Premier League football clubs if they can prove it will be used to boost grassroots sport.

The government this week unveiled a new strategy to address declining participation figures among young people and stalled progress in the plan to use the 2012 Games to inspire the population to get fit. Hunt said that the £450m earmarked for sports governing bodies over four years to develop links between schools and clubs and drive grassroots sport could be diverted elsewhere if they failed to deliver.
