The NUSC roadshow rolls into the city centre and lands smack bang in the shadow of our beloved St James Park. To be exact it rolls into the Strawberry pub, and what a pub it is (even if John Anderson joked about the price of Guinness!!). It’s what some would call “a proper pub”, no fancy lights, no dancing girls, no chrome finishes, and no bloody communal toilets!! What it does have is history, real drink / beer, tradition, the taste and smell of NUFC, a half decent jukebox, it has the craic. Its where you meet before or after the match, its where when you come out of the match there always seems to be one nutter trying to manoeuvre their car through thousands of fans trying to get to the pub!!
To kick off the night there was a minutes silence and thought for Sir Bobby Robson, it was immaculately observed, very moving coming on top of the fantastic tribute by people over the road in the Leazes end. All the proceeds from last nights roadshow at the Strawberry, from domino cards, from the quiz etc are going to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. God bless you SBR, our thoughts are with your family.
Steve Hastie an NUSC committee member recalled how the NUSC came to be, what it had been doing, and more importantly what the future holds. The message is important, the message that the NUSC, now the official Newcastle United Supporters Trust, can be ‘the’ collective voice the fans have needed. The development of the NUSC into the trust has not been easy against the backdrop of Mike Ashley decimating our club. People say why don’t you do this, why don’t you march, why don’t you storm the gates at St James and burn Ashley and his sidekicks at the stake? Well we thought about it!! What we have now is a properly constituted nationally backed Newcastle Supporters Trust that can forge on, work for the fans, community and club, and ultimately have a stake in the running of the club.
The guest speaker former Toon player John Anderson (Ando) was introduced and Ando began to regale the audience with his thoughts on the plight of NUFC and what the future may hold. Ando would go on to talk about his time at Newcastle and have the audience bent over with laughter telling us about big Jack, Gazza, Billy Whitehurst, and our little Brazilian friend Mirandinha!!
Meanwhile across the road in Shearers bar Radio Newcastle and 5live were conducting a live Newcastle special. The NUSC had committee members at the live event and they had their say on the current state of NUFC and how the NUSC can help any new owners and be a huge positive influence. The panellists all spoke well, even if the slightly patronising host was a bit annoying! Interestingly some of the audience then joined the fun over the road at the Strawberry when the live event was over, and i'm pleased to report that not a drop of any alcoholic beverages passed my lips during my short time at Shearers.
