Supporters Direct Newsletter - July

It seems a long time ago already that over 300 trust activists debated a better vision for football at the Savoy Place in London, and witnessed the launch of the social value of football report. It seems even longer that the English delegates celebrated a Steven Gerrard goal at the drinks reception! Alongside admiring the passing of the Spanish and the finishing of the Dutch we've managed to speak to the people who presented at the sessions and gather together as much information from the 2 days to share with everyone.
This makes up the main focus of the July news email. Enjoy!

A Better Vision For Football
- Annual Conference 2010

This year’s Annual Conference was split into two days of debate, discussion, learning and sharing of experiences.

Ken Loach spoke on his life as a fan of Bath City and why he directed cult classic Looking For Eric, and there was a lively, challenging discussion involving Lee Strafford (former Sheffield Wednesday Chairman) Gavin Megaw (Football League), Christian Muller (German Football League) and Oli Houston from MUST. There’s a review of the day and its issues on the excellent 200% blog and we’ll be making video footage available soon, so keep an eye out in future bulletins and on the website.

For now if you did miss a session you’d hoped to attend or couldn’t make it along last month, we wanted to make sure as much of the information is available to you. A whole range of stuff ranging from why football’s finances are in the state they’re in, how to spot the crisis, what to do as a trust when your club doesn’t want to know (thanks to Cardiff and Newcastle) and when it does (thanks to Bristol City and Newport County) is available by clicking the links in the right hand column.

For those of you who made it to the Conference in London last month, we would love to hear your feedback via our quick online survey

Scottish Conference 2010

A very successful Scottish conference was held in Stirling again this year with Andy Walsh (pictured below) of FC United of Manchester and Keith Ferguson of CAFE proving to be be popular and informative speakers. Andy was particularly inspiring in discussing the values and principles of a football club and Keith eloquently described the experiences of disabled football fans who just want to go and watch the game.

A significant section of the conference was devoted to discussing the current review of Scottish football by former First Minister, Henry McLeish, as well as an examination of the wider issues that are ready for reform. The sessions provided a lot of interesting and diverse views but there was unanimous agreement that supporters' trusts and Supporters Direct should be more confident at putting their views forward. SD in Scotland are currently finalising the conference report and exploring the options for a wider campaign on football reform.

New Community Clubs

Over the past few months we have seen a rash of new trust owned clubs with fans of Merthyr Town FC, Chester FC, Fisher FC and Stirling Albion. Congratulations to all from SD and the trust movement. After some turbulent recent times (to say the least!) there is definitely some light at the end of the tunnel. A record 20 clubs are now owned by their supporters trust across football, rugby league and ice hockey

Co-operative Fortnight

Supporters Trusts were out in force to celebrate Co-operatives fortnight including an event at Villa Park hosted by the Midlands Co-operative with the Rams Trust exhibiting, plus FC United ran a hugely successful family fun day at their proposed site for the new stadium at Newton Heath.

New look SD

You'll notice from the new logo on this email, and the branding if you were at the Conference that there's a new look and feel about SD. Following a review of what we do, we’re focusing on being a much more outward looking organisation, campaigning for the kinds of changes we all want in our sports. Keep an eye out over the coming months, the logo is just the start.
