Over £10milllion paid to agents by Championship clubs last season
Recently published figures show over £10m was paid to agents by clubs in the English second tier over the course of the 2009/10 season. This state of affairs is even more ridiculous when you consider that agents also ‘earn’ money from the players directly, when they act on their behalf. Newcastle United may have finished top of the points league but Middlesbrough actually pushed them into second when it came down to how much they shelled out to agents, an eyewatering £1.4m was paid out by the Boro with Newcastle paying out just over £1m.
This kind of spending is unsustainable for the football industry as a whole and there has to be a collective effort from all clubs to use the supporters’ money for the benefit of the club and the community, rather than it being diverted to a small number of agents who seemingly take out a lot of money for very little return.
