An altogether comfortable win this despite Malky Mackay’s comments on the awful Football League Show last night, pretty much saying Watford bossed the game and a draw would have been a fair result.
Starting early again with the scoring, a free kick rightly awarded for a foul on Jonas (the theatrical ‘afters’un-necessary) which Guthrie swung over from our left, Carroll nodded back across goal for ‘I want curly hair too’ to head home at the near post, 4 minutes 1-0 up. Such was the comfort with which we controlled the first half I don’t recall thinking we were in danger of not going into half time at least 1-0 up.
With Routledge and Lovenkrands out Hughton started with Guthrie on the right and Best partnering Carroll up front in a 4-4-2 which was unexpected after recent performances at Derby and Swansea, we half expected a tried and trusted 4-5-1 a la away wins at Ipswich and Cardiff to name 2.
The second half started equally well for us after a counter attack started by Carroll from the edge of our box and a strong run forward from Van Aanholt ended with us winning a corner on our left. Now we generally don’t score from corners but Guthrie’s delivery was spot on for Carroll to rise at the near post and power a header in just 5 minutes into the second half for 2-0. As has been the case in the first half we were never under serious threat until the last 20 minutes when Watford poured forward but we looked comfortable until the first minute of injury time when a deflection off ‘I want curly hair too’ fell at the feet of Hoskins to lace it home with 3 minutes of added time left.
It would have been harsh if Watford had managed an equaliser but we could have killed the game at 2-0 when a Leon Best cross found Carroll unmarked, but offside as it happens, but Carroll missed with an easier header than the one he had scored with earlier.
An all round excellent performance with only one question mark....there’s always one with me... Leon Best, whilst still settling in to the club has yet to convince me he should start ahead of Ranger The first away win this season when we have conceded a goal and with Forest getting beaten 3-0 at ...and Leicester a good day for us in more ways than one.
Starting XI was; Harper, Simpson, Coloccini, Williamson, Van Aanholt, Gutierrez, Smith, Nerlan, Guthrie, Carroll and Best
Subs; Ranger for Best, R Taylor for Gutierrez and Pancrate for Guthrie.

MOM for me, Coloccini a second goal for us and again unflustered in defence
